“My teacher has an innate gift for communicating how to play a piece, dissecting your flaws and trying to turn them around in a positive way. She has such enthusiasm for the music and patience with a slow learner like me.” - Debra

The School strongly believes that the right match of student and teacher is vital to a student’s progress, pleasure of learning and enjoyment of music. Therefore, after an initial consultation with our Admissions office, the private lesson student is assigned to a faculty member whose teaching style most closely complements the student’s learning style and personality. We offer private lessons of 30, 45 or 60 minutes in classical, jazz, popular, rock, folk and world music styles. Students can start private lessons any time of the year or month so there’s no need to wait to get started. Contact ISM now to see which days and times are available.

Individual Instruction—more than just lessons

The Music School's program provides a well-rounded musical education, including weekly lessons, regular evaluation and frequent performance and ensemble opportunities. Taking part in all aspects of the curriculum helps a student perform more easily, broaden his or her musical skills and make new musical friends. The individual instruction curriculum includes:

  • Orientation session to discuss individual goals and lesson schedule

  • Weekly lessons tailored to meet those goals

  • Professional accompaniment provided for rehearsals and performances

  • Informal performance workshops

  • Student recitals

  • Community performance opportunities

  • Master classes

  • Certificate program

  • Regular evaluation through written reports. Communication between students, parents and instructors is ongoing and includes progress reports at the end of academic year.

  • Juries/exams (practical evaluations by the ISM faculty)

  • Consultations with program staff on future directions (lessons, progress, ensemble choices and even college plans).

Individual instruction is at the heart of the ISM music education program and is available to students of all ages and abilities from beginners to advanced levels. Private lessons encourage the growth of instrumental and vocal skills, both motor and aural, and basic music literacy. Students meet individually, usually on a weekly basis with their teachers who develop individualized programs for study.

In private lessons, ISM students learn to master the instrument they have chosen and to communicate musical purpose and meaning through that instrument. With weekly ISM instruction, combined with commitment on the part of students and family support, progress can be rapid. Students experience the excitement and satisfaction that comes with full understanding and performance of great works of music. Students of all ages, abilities and levels of experience learn the technical and musical skills needed to make any instrument or voice a vehicle for self-expression and enjoyment.

Trial Lessons

A trial lesson provides a combined lesson and consultation prior to enrollment in regularly scheduled individual instruction. The lesson gives prospective students a no-obligation opportunity to try an instrument or become familiar with a teacher. Private rates apply for trial lessons.
