“Maryland was a very isolated place for me when I moved here from overseas.  Involvement at the ISM was one of my first forays into the community.  There I met others of my own age who, through singing and laughter, helped me create moments of joy and friendship.  The ISM has brought far more than musical training and appreciation into my life.  It has given me a powerful reason to call Maryland home.” –Maria

Benefits of Music

Why is Music Education so important?

There is an undeniably strong correlation between music education and the development of skills that our children need to become successful in life. Self-discipline, patience, sensitivity, coordination, and the ability to memorize and to concentrate are all enhanced in the study of music. These skills will follow your child on whatever path he or she chooses in life. Music lessons can have a formative influence that may be second only to the love you give your child. If you’re looking for a way to provide your child with a source of life-long joy, satisfaction, and accomplishment, childhood music education is an excellent first step.

Students of music learn to become craftsman; they study how details are put together painstakingly to create beautiful, not just mediocre sounds. Through music study, students learn the value of sustained effort to achieve excellence and the concrete rewards of hard work.
Music study also enhances teamwork skills. For an orchestra to succeed, all players must work together harmoniously towards a single goal, the performance, and must commit to learning music, attending rehearsals, and practicing together.

Music provides students with an important means of self-expression. Everyone needs to be in touch at some time in his life with his core, with what he is and what he feels. Self-esteem is a by-product of this self-expression.

Music performance teaches students to conquer fear and to take risks. A little anxiety is a good thing, and something that will occur often in life. Learning how to deal with it early and often makes it less of a problem later. Risk-taking is essential if a child is to fully develop his/her potential.

“Studying music encourages self-discipline and diligence, traits that carry over into intellectual pursuits and that lead to effective study and work habits. An association of music and math has, in fact, long been noted. Creating and performing music promotes self-expression and provides self-gratification while giving pleasure to others." - Michael E. De Bakey, M.D

Your child will learn to enjoy listening to music, acquire a new mental discipline and physical skill, gain poise and self-confidence. Music lessons also foster the development of the child's ability to think logically and analytically, increase his/her attention span, cognitive and motor development. With the right guidance, music can help the child's personal growth and development as well as this/her own individual expression and self-confidence not only of the mind, but also of the soul and spirit.

“Music making makes people healthier… there were significant decreases in anxiety, depression, and loneliness. These are factors that are critical in coping with stress, stimulating the immune system, and in improved health.”

- Dr. Frederick Tims
