The International School of Music's faculty is made up of highly qualified and talented performers and teachers with worldwide concert and pedagogical experience. Faculty members go through an extensive interview and audition process before being accepted to teach at the ISM. Many hold masters and doctorate degrees from the most acclaimed and respected music conservatories and are dedicated and passionate about their art and teaching. They bring warmth, energy, enthusiasm and patience in working with children as well as adults. Our teachers are also members of numerous local and national music guilds and associations such as Music Teachers National Association, Maryland Music Teacher Association, American String Teacher association, National Federation of Musicians, and the National Guild of Piano teachers/American College of Musicians, among others.


Percussion/Drums


Joanna Dabrowska (Percussion) BM – Joanna Dabrowska earned her Bachelor of Music in Percussion Performance from the Peabody Conservatory. Ms. Dabrowska is the Principal Timpanist of the Washington Metropolitan Philharmonic (WMP). In addition to performing with groups such as the McLean Orchestra, Capital City Symphony, Friday Morning Music Club, and the Brass of the Potomac, she has performed as a soloist with the WMP, and the Peabody Wind Ensemble, and premiered many new works. Many of her students have successfully auditioned for numerous advanced programs in Maryland, including the Baltimore School for the Arts, Maryland All State Band, Maryland Youth Symphony Orchestra, Howard County GT Bands, and various music festivals.


Glenn W. Sewell (percussion) MM, BME- Glenn Sewell obtained his Masters in Percussion Performance from Indiana University. His teaching career includes teaching at various high schools in Mississippi as well as teaching undergraduate percussion lessons and music theory at Indiana University. In addition to performing with such groups as the Washington Symphony Orchestra, McLean Orchestra, Washington Metropolitan Philharmonic, and the Eclipse Chamber Orchestra, Glenn has also appeared with the National Symphony Orchestra.

Ivan Amir (Flute/Piccolo) BM- Ivan Amir is a graduate of the University of Maryland, School of Music with a Bachelor of Music in Flute Performance with a strong emphasis on Piccolo. Mr. Amir has instructed students of all ages and coached various ensembles. Ivan has appeared as a soloist with the University of Maryland Repertoire Orchestra multiple times. Mr. Amir was also named a finalist in the University of Maryland Concerto Competition performing Vivaldi’s Concerto for Piccolo in A Minor. Ivan has also appeared with the National Orchestral Institute Symphony Orchestra.


Jeremiah Baker (Saxophone/Clarinet) MM, BM- Winner of numerous prizes and scholarships, Jeremiah Baker started playing the saxophone at the age of 12. He recently won the Sound of America Solo Competition in Orlando, Florida as well as the Young Soloist Competition at Shenandoah University. He was the youngest finalist in the 2008 Pro Musicis International Solo Competition. Active as a soloist with orchestra and as a recitalist, Jeremiah is also an active chamber musician. He is a founding member of the Après Duo (with harpist Jackie Pollauf, www.duoapres.com) and the AM/PM saxophone quartet. He has commissioned works from several composers including Kathleen Bader, Miguel Bolivar, Charles Halka, Ying-Chen Kao and Christopher Pierce. Using the saxophone as a bridge between the popular and classical world, Mr. Baker is currently working to expand the possibilities of the saxophone. He will continue his studies as a Doctoral student at the Peabody Conservatory.


Caitlin Boruch (Flute) MM, BM- A graduate of the University of Iowa and the University of California, Santa Barbara, Ms. Boruch’s educational resume includes positions with the Music Academy of the West MERIT Program, ArtSmart, and Santa Barbara Youth Orchestra. As a performer, she plays with many area chamber ensembles, including an MTNA award-winning flute quartet with whom she just completed a European tour. Ms. Boruch maintained active private studios in both Iowa and California, where her students frequently won awards such as the Santa Barbara Youth Symphony Concerto Competition.


Ashleigh Butler (Oboe) BM, BME- Ms. Butler currently holds both a Bachelor of Music in Oboe Performance and a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from the University of Maryland, School of Music. A private oboe instructor for four years, Ashleigh has served on the music faculty of Mount View Middle School, Jacksonville Elementary, the University of Maryland Summer Youth Music Camp, and the Suitland High School Performing Arts Program and currently serves as Director of Instrumental Music at Thomas W. Pyle Middle School. Ashleigh Butler has performed with such groups as the University of Maryland Symphony Orchestra and Philharmonia and frequently performs with the Londontown Symphony Orchestra.


Michael Chamberlin (Clarinet/Saxophone) Mr. Chamberlin is a graduate of the prestigious Jazz Studies Program at the University of North Texas. He is currently pursuing a Doctorate Degree from the University of Maryland, College Park. He has given private lessons and master classes at several highs schools and middle schools in both Texas and Ohio, and has recently been publish in MENC Collegiate News. Mr. Chamberlin is a member of MENC, the North American Saxophone Alliance and the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.


Camille A. Delaney (Flute) Ms. Delaney is a graduate of the University of Maryland, College Park. While at UMD, she served as a teaching assistant for undergraduate courses as well as participating in prestigious master classes and ensembles. She was a finalist in the Flute Society of Washington Collegiate Competition, a performer in the Washington Guest Artist Master Class, and Second Place winner in the Wallace Mann Orchestral Excerpt Competition. Ms. Delaney also served as a sectional coach for Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School and holds the position of Assistant Director of St. Luke’s Parish Singers in Bladensberg, MD.


Elsbeth Fager (Flute) MM, BA- Ms. Fager studied at L’Accademia Internazionale Della Musica and Antonio Vivaldi Conservatory of Music in Alessandria, Italy. Elsbeth’s teaching experience includes music festivals and master classes sponsored by the University of Georgia in Maryland, Pennsylvania and Georgia. Some of her performances include appearances with the University of Georgia Wind Ensemble and Symphony Orchestra as well as the Bucknell University Symphony Orchestra. Ms. Fager currently serves as program and production assistant for the Wolftrap Foundation for the Performing Arts.


Brian Falkowski (Woodwinds) BM- Mr. Falkowski is a recent graduate of the University of Maryland, College Park, where he studied Saxophone Performance. Proficient in flute and clarinet as well, Mr. Falkowski’s versatility has led him to many performance opportunities in the Washington, DC area and beyond. His experience in teaching all three instruments has secured him positions with Harmonia School of Music and Arena Sound Music, and his competition credentials include the Grand Prize in the Mu Phi Epsilon Soloist competition. Mr. Falkowski continues to perform regularly as a freelance musician throughout the DC area as he builds his studio here at ISM.


Dimitri Kostaras (Woodwinds) MM, BM- A recent graduate of the Master’s Program at the Peabody Institute, Mr. Kostaras has maintained an active career as both a performer and educator. His honors and awards include being named the winner of the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, a finalist in the Chamber Music Division of the Chesapeake Competition, and serving on the Artist Roster with VIM Saxophone Quartet at Strathmore Music Center. During his undergraduate studies at Eastman School of Music, he performed with several outreach ensembles and given a number of master classes and recitals in the Rochester area. In the DC area, Mr. Kostaras serves on the faculty of the Levine School of Music and maintains a private studio.


Dr. Steven M. Leffue (Saxophone,/Clarinet/Flute/Theory) DMA, DEM, MM, BM In addition to studies at Bowling Green State University, the University of Florida, and the University of Maryland, Steven earned a Premiere Prix ala unanimite at the Conservatoire Nationale de Region Boulogne-Billancourt (Paris France). Specializing in classical, contemporary, chamber, and improvisational music, Steven’s prizes include the Coleman Chamber Music Competition, the Premiere Concours de Musique Populaire, and the Concours des Jeune Musiciens ville de Lempdes. Steven has performed in venues across the United States, Canada, France, and Belgium. His recent appearances include with Inscape Chamber Orchestra, the Great Noise Ensemble, and his own IntProv Collective. Dr. Leffue has received dedications from numerous composers including Robert Morris, Thomas DeLio, and Andrew Mead.


Mary Matthews (Flute) Ms. Matthews is currently pursuing her Master’s Degree in Flute Performance under the instruction of Emily Skala at the Peabody Institute. She began her flute studies in the Eastman Preparatory Program with Jan Angus and continued her musical education at the Baldwin-Wallace Conservatory with George Pope. Highlights from Baldwin-Wallace include a performance with the festival chamber orchestra at the 75th anniversary Bach Festival at Severance Hall and a performance of the Nielsen Flute Concerto with the Conservatory Orchestra. Ms. Matthews has won numerous competitions including the Kathryn E. MacPhail Young Artist, the Firelands Symphony Orchestra Young Artist, and the Baldwin-Wallace Concerto Competitions. She was also a finalist in the 2009 William C. Byrd Young Artist Competition. As a member of the Visione Trio with flutist Melissa Wertheimer and guitarist Todd Holcomb, Ms. Matthews placed third in the J.C. Arriaga Chamber Music Competition.


Daniel Musacchio (Bassoon) Dan is a senior bassoon performance and music education major at the University of Maryland. He began his studies at Maryland his sophomore year after he transferred from the Eastman School of Music. He has performed with various ensembles at the University of Maryland, Eastman School of Music, and as a freelance musician and in such venues as the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, New Jersey Performing Arts Center, and Carnegie Hall. He is a recipient of the Frederica Von Stade Scholarship and Howard Hanson Scholarship. His primary bassoon teachers are Brian Kershner, John Hunt, Kim Laskowski, and Sue Heineman.

 


Voice

 

Jessica Abel (Voice) MM, BM- Jessica Abel received her Master of Vocal Performance and Pedagogy from the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University and her Bachelor of Vocal Music Performance from Florida State University. Ms. Abel has performed in many operas with the Peabody Opera Theater and the FSU Opera Company. She also recently traveled to Paris to perform for the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization as a soloist and member of the International Fusion Arts Ensemble. Jessica is a recipient of numerous accolades such as being named a finalist at the Peabody Voice Competition, receiving a full scholarship from the International Fusion Arts Exchange Program, and winning a scholarship from The Rollins Young Artist Competition.


Lourdes Berthin (Voice/Piano/Theory) MM, BM- A recipient of a Master’s Degree in Music and a Bachelor of Music in Voice and Piano Performance from the Catholic University of America in Washington D.C., Lourdes Berthin is an active singer and pianist in the D.C. metro area. Ms. Berthin served as Music Director and Conductor at St. Matthew’s Cathedral in Washington, D.C. and performed frequently as a vocal soloist and pianist. Lourdes’s teaching career includes instructing piano, voice, and coaching Latin American/Spanish Vocal/Choral Literature.


Annie Gill (Voice) GPD, MM, BM- Soprano Annie Gill has been performing professionally since the age of 13. Equally at home in operetta, musical theater, and grand opera, Ms. Gill’s recent roles include the part of Phyllis in the Washington Savoyards’ production of Iolanthe, Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni and Musetta in La Bohème with Center Stage Opera, and First Lady in The Magic Flute with Opera AACC. In addition to her performances on stage, Ms. Gill won first place at the Maryland District NATS competition in the Advanced Graduate Women category in 2007, and was a finalist in the 2008 competition.


Meghan McCall (Voice) Miss McCall has earned her BA in Music Literature from Northeastern University and her MM from The University of Maryland Opera Studio. Recent roles include Fiordiligi in Cosi Fan Tutte, Lauretta in Gianni Schicchi, Musetta in La Bohème, Adina in L'Elisir d'Amore, Gilda in Rigoletto, Gretel in Hansel and Gretel, Marie in La Fille du Régiment, Susanna in Le Nozze di Figaro. Miss McCall is currently a performing artist with Opera Lafayette Young Artist Program, and her 2010 engagements include debuts at Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center and also a recording with NAXOS.


Maureen Mullaney (Voice) Ms. Mullaney has studied classical, contemporary, and jazz vocal technique with such luminaries as Jay Clayton and Catherine Frazier-Neely. She has a B.A. in Vocal Performance from SUNY Geneseo and a certification in vocal somatics at Shenandoah Conservatory. Maureen’s technique combines the rich tradition of classical vocal technique with contemporary concepts of registration and vocal somatics. Maureen’s current jazz band, Minor Thoughts, can be seen at Basin 219, Bobby’s Jazz, and Twins Jazz. Their latest CD, Live at Sangha, was released in 2007.


Matthew Osifchin (Voice) Mr. Osifchin is currently on faculty at Suitland High School, where his students have received partial and full scholarships to outstanding colleges and conservatoires including, Cincinnati Conservatory School of Music, Westminster Choir College, and New England Conservatory. Mr. Osifchin holds a BM degree from the Indiana University School of Music and an MM from the University of Maryland. . He recently debuted with the Washington Opera as Guccio in the critically acclaimed production of Gianni Schicchi. Mr. Osifchin appeared on Japanese television in a concert of Broadway Duets and Arias in Tsukuba, Japan. He has also been successful in numerous competitions including, finalist in the NSO Young Soloists competition, 3rd place in the Marie E. Crump vocal competition and 1st place in the Gretchen Hood competition.


Dr. Waka Osifchin (Suzuki Violin/Voice) DMA, MM, BM- Ms. Osifchin is a certified instructor of violin and voice. She has been a recipient of many awards such as the Lucie Kohlmeier and Music Merit awards among others. Her teaching experience includes the Takezono Higashi School, and Maryland School of the Arts, and as a graduate teaching assistant at the Catholic University. As a violinist Ms. Osifchin has performed with orchestras such as Catholic University Symphony Orchestra, the Takezono and Tonton String Orchestras.


Sarah L. Powell (Voice/Piano) MM, BA- Sarah Powell received her Master’s in Music from the New England Conservatory in Boston, and her Bachelor of Arts in Music Performance from the University of North Carolina. Ms. Powell has led various groups ranging from conducting a cappella voice ensembles at UNC to directing scenes programs for New England Conservatory Light Opera Company. Her performance career includes appearing in numerous operas and shows such as Don Giovanni (Zerlina) with the Boston Opera Collaborative, The Gondoliers (Tessa) with Savoyard Light Opera Company, Guys and Dolls (Sarah Brown) with the Turtle Lane Theater, and Grease (Rizzo) with the Grapevine Runway Theater.


Jennifer Rutherford (Voice) MM, BM University- Mrs. Rutherford completed private studies in Toronto (COC), Montreal (McGill), and Washington DC. She has performed in Canada, Israel, Europe, Scandanavia, Turkey, and the United States. She has also appeared in broadcasts for TV and radio in Canada. Formerly instructor of voice at the Columbia Institute of Fine Arts, VA, Mrs. Rutherford is currently on the voice faculty at the International School of Music. She is a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing and is proficient in Opera, lieder, art song, oratorio, Broadway, choral, and jazz styles. In addition to recording, Ms. Rutherford currently performs with local musical theater in the Washington DC metropolitan area. Jennifer is a volunteer and co-founder of the Anacostia Gracious Arts Program which provides less fortunate children arts opportunities in Southeast DC.

Lena Seikaly (Voice) Lena is a classical and jazz vocalist with an ever-growing following in standard and traditional jazz circles nationwide. She has appeared at local festivals and has performed with artists such as Christian McBride, Benito Gonzalez, Raul Mascarenhas, Eddie Locke and Bob Draga.She frequently performs at local D.C. venues including Blues Alley and Twins Jazz. She made her NYC debut at Harlem’s historic St. Nick’s Pub in 2007. Lena is also an accomplished mezzo soprano, and is completing training from world-renowned bass-bariton, Francois Loup at the University of Maryland.


Angela Peterson Winter (Voice) MM, BM- Mrs. Winter holds degrees from Westminster Choir College of Rider University and Butler University. Mrs. Winter has performed as chorister and soloist throughout the United States, the Czech Republic and Italy, appearing in such venues as the Kennedy Center, Avery Fischer Hall, and Tanglewood. She currently performs as a soprano with the Master Chorale of Washington DC, and recently gave the Czech Republic Premiere of world renowned female composer Viteszlava Kaprlova’s chamber piece “Leden”. Mrs. Winter is a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing, serves on the faculty of the International School of Music and collaborates with choral and drama departments of Edison High School.

 


Violin

 

Anne Chicheportiche (Violin/Viola)MM, BM- Ms. Chicheportiche earned degrees from DePaul University, Lynn University School of Music, and The Geneva Conservatory. Her teaching experience includes posts at the American Music Institute, DePaul University’s Chamber Orchestra, and the Marly-le-Roi School of Music in Paris, France. No stranger to the stage, Ms. Chicheportiche has served as Assistant Principal Violinist with both the Fairfax Symphony and the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, in addition to her work with several chamber groups in the US and France. She is the winner of both the Mizner Competition and the France National Broadcast Competition, and has been a participant in both the Jewish European Music Festival and the Festival De La Cite in France.

Irina Garkavi (Violin) MA- Ms.Garkavi has been a concertmaster of the Arlington Symphony Orchestra, Mount Vernon Orchestra, Washington Metropolitan Philharmonic, and Azerbaijan State Symphony. She has performed also with Fairfax Symphony, Alexandria Symphony, Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra, the Washington Chamber Orchestra. Ms. Garkavi recorded for Melodia Records Company, and she was consistently selected for National television broadcast in Moscow where she received advanced musical training at the Moscow Conservatory. Currently she is a member of the American Federation of Musicians and the International Teacher Association. Ms. Garkavi’s pedagogical experience includes Azerbijan State Music Conservatory, European Academy of Music and Art, Gaithersburg Violin Studio, Mt. Vernon Music Festival and ISM.


Gretchen Heller (Violin) Ms. Heller is a graduate of the University of North Carolina, Greensboro. While studying in Greensboro, she performed regularly with such ensembles as the Greensboro Symphony Orchestra, the University Symphony, Long Leaf Opera Company, and the Fibonacci Chamber Orchestra. Other performance highlights include work with the Michigan Pops Orchestra, where she served as assistant concertmaster, the World Youth Symphony Orchestra, and the Liberace Trio. Ms. Heller’s honors include the Liberace Scholarship, and the National Federation of Music Clubs’ Merit Scholarship. She was on the faculty of the Cary School of Music before coming to ISM.


Slavica Ilic (Violin) BM- Ms. Ilic has been on the faculty of ISM, the DC Youth Orchestra, School of Music for Young Talents, and the Columbia Institute of Fine Arts. Ms. Ilic has performed with numerous orchestras throughout Israel, Italy, Yugoslavia, France, and the U.S. As a member of the Aspen Symphony and Opera Orchestra she had the opportunity to perform “La Boheme” under Maestro Lawrence Foster. Ms. Ilic has made appearances with orchestra at Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, the Lyseum and Constitution Hall. In addition to several awards from string ad chamber competitions, she was a recipient of a Fellowship for the Aspen Music Festival where she studied with Dorothy Delay.


Julia Kay (Suzuki Violin) BM- Ms. Kay’s recent performances include appearances with the Rollins College String Ensemble and Orchestra, the Interlochen Festival Orchestra, the Levine School Trio as well as numerous concert engagements in England, China and the Eastern United States. She has worked for the American Music Therapy Association and her teaching experience includes the Timber Ridge Camp and Anne Arundel Public Schools. Ms. Kay is certified and holds licenses in Musikgarten and Suzuki method violin, and has served as an adjudicator for the Maryland All-State Junior and Senior Orchestras.


Rebecca Kletzker (Violin/Viola/Piano) Ms. Kletzker has received degrees in both music performance and music education. She is an active freelance performer in the Washington, D. C. area, and has performed with groups such as the Season of Ascension Trio, The Great Noise Ensemble, Inscape, the University of Maryland Symphony, Contemporary Chamber Players, The Alton Symphony Orchestra, and the Jewish Community Center Symphony Orchestra. She has received numerous honors and has participated in music festivals in Europe and across the United States. She is currently an instructor of strings at DeMatha Catholic High School and ISM. Her recordings include “Todd Agna”, “Grace Like Rain”, and “Reflection of Something”.


Jessica Kuo (Violin/Viola) MM, BM- Jessica earned her degrees from the Eastman School of Music where she began a private studio and invested in the school’s Music Outreach Program within area public schools. Her performance experience includes a number of recitals, chamber music and orchestral performances with groups such The Landon Symphonette and The National Festival Orchestra at Carnegie Hall. Ms. Kuo also studied orchestral conducting at Eastman under Maestro Neil Varon. She is a member of the Music Teachers National Association, American String Teachers Association and the Maryland State Music Teachers Association.


Martha Morrison (Violin Ms. Morrisson is an active teacher and musician in the Washington, DC area. She has performed with the Maryland Philharmonic, Peabody Symphony, Ohio Opera Orchestra, Baylor Symphony Orchestra, The National Orchestral Institute, Mid-Atlantic Symphony Orchestra, and the Waco Symphony Orchestra. Ms. Morrison maintains studios at the Maryland Academy of Music and assists pedagogy class at Peabody Conservatory, in addition to her studio at ISM. She is a graduate of Baylor University and Peabody Conservatory.

Greg Pinney (Violin/Viola, Suzuki Methods) BM- Greg received his undergraduate from the Eastman School of Music where he studied with Zui Zeith and Oleg Krysa, and from 1995-98 Mr. Pinney was a teaching assistant to Emmanuel Borok. His extensive performance experience includes concerts with Covington String Quartet, the United States Air Force Strings, Delaware and Irving Symphonies, Quapaw Quartet, and the Fort Worth Orchestra. Mr. Pinney has taught at Gettysburg College, Frederick Community College, Montgomery Community College, Delaware School of Music, University of Conway, and the University of Arkansas.

 


Cello/Double Bass

 

Margaret Ayre (Suzuki Cello/Double Bass) BM Double Bass Performance from Ithaca College and Suzuki Cello certification through Book IV. Margaret has headed Suzuki Cello and Bass programs for the last decade at schools such as The Music School of the RI Philharmonic and most recently at Settlement Music School in Philadelphia. Also an active singer-songwriter, string arranger and session musician, Margaret has recorded and produced several albums and tours North America and the EU with her band regularly. Ms. Ayre’s teachers have included Henry Neubert, James VanDemark, Pamela Gearhart and Nancy Hair.


Dr. Diana Flesner (Cello) DMA, MM- Diana has completed studies at the San Francisco Conservatory, Middlebury College, and the University of Illinois. Equally active as a performer and teacher, Ms. Flesner has taught at Millikin College, Illinois-Wesleyan Prep, the Conservatory of Central Illinois and the Young Artists’ Studio of Terrine Gomez. She presently performs with the Alexandria and Fairfax Symphonies, and the Chesapeake Piano Trio. Ms. Flesner’s teachers include Brandon Vamos, Bonnie Hampton, Jean-Michel Fonteneau, and Dieuwke Davydov. Her professional affiliations include the College Music Society and Chamber Music America.


Elizabeth Meszaros (Cello) MM, BM- Elizabeth Meszaros is currently pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Maryland. She has earned a Master of Music in Cello Performance from LSU, studying with Dennis Parker, and attended Ithaca College in New York where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Cello Performance and Music Education, studying with Elizabeth Simkin. She has participated in the Bowdoin International Music Festival, the Internation Festival at Round Top, the Adriatic Chamber Music Festival, and the Heber Springs Music Festival. Ms. Meszaros is a prizewinner in the LSU Concerto Competition. She was a member of the Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra, Acadiana Symphony, and Louisiana Sinfonietta. An avid chamber musician, Ms. Meszaros and her quartet were recently selected by the University of Maryland to receive a String Quartet Fellowship where they will be studying with the Guarneri String Quartet and the Left Bank Quartet. Ms. Meszaros has performed on concert stages around the country, including Alice Tully Hall and Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center, as well as numerous other performances across the U.S. As an educator, Ms. Meszaros is comfortable teaching all ages and ability levels. She joined the faculty at the International School of Music in August of 2008.


Alexandra Sia (Cello) Ms. Sia is a graduate of the University of British Columbia undergraduate program and the Master’s program at the Peabody Institute. She has served as principle cellist with the University of British Columbia Orchestra and has played with many esteemed ensembles such as The Peabody Symphony Orchestra, The Canada Symphony Orchestra Academy of the Pacific and the Kamloops Symphony Orchestra. Ms. Sia’s teaching experience includes a position on the faculty of Prussin Music, where she maintained a private cello studio for 3 years before beginning her Master’s degree at Peabody.



Piano

 

Michael Angelucci (Piano) MM, BM- Michael is the winner of numerous state, regional, and international awards such as the California International Young Artist Competition and the Le Gesse Foundation. He is an active recitalist with performances in Europe and across the continental U.S. He is a former teaching assistant at Santa Clara University, and graduate teaching assistant at The Peabody Conservatory. Currently on faculty at ISM and The McDonogh School (Baltimore), Mr. Angelucci is also Director of Music at St. Joseph’s Monastery Parish. Mr. Angelucci is a National Piano Guild Member.


Dr. Christopher Astilla (Piano) DMA, MM, BM- A winner of the El Paso Symphony Guild Young Artist Competition, Midland-Odessa National Young Artists Competition, Overture to the Cultural Season Piano Competition, and the Tourgee Debose National Piano Competition, Christopher Astilla has clearly established himself as a formidable pianist. His education includes a Bachelor of Music Performance, a Masters of Music, and a Doctorate of Musical Arts all from the University of North Texas. Mr. Astilla has had a studio comprising of elementary, high school, and university age students. Christopher frequently performs internationally as a soloist and as a chamber ensemble musician.


Wade Beach (Jazz/Piano) MM BM University- Having completed jazz studies with Sir Roland Hanna, Roosevelt Wardell. And Gene Rush, Mr. Beach has taught at the Prince George’s and Northern Virginia Community College, and the Landon School. Mr. Beach has performed with musicians including: Eddie Harris, Billy Harper, Gary Bartz, Richie Cole, Grady Tate, Keeter Betts, Peter Erskine, Bob Berg, Tommy Newsome, Joe Williams, Ernie Watts, Arturo Sandoval, Dave Liebman, and Andrew White. He has also performed with pop artists The Dells, Jackson Five, Berry White. In addition to recording numerous albums, he has performed also at the Constitution Hall, East Coast Jazz Festival, Kool Jazz Fest at the Kennedy Center, Wolftrap Jazz Fest and Blues Alley.


Lourdes Berthin (Voice/Piano/Theory) MM, BM- A recipient of a Master’s Degree in Music and a Bachelor of Music in Voice and Piano Performance from the Catholic University of America in Washington D.C., Lourdes Berthin is an active singer and pianist in the D.C. metro area. Ms. Berthin served as Music Director and Conductor at St. Matthew’s Cathedral in Washington, D.C. and performed frequently as a vocal soloist and pianist. Lourdes’s teaching career includes instructing piano, voice, and coaching Latin American/Spanish Vocal/Choral Literature.


Danielle Drobny (Piano) Pianist/Accompanist Danielle Drobny has been studying piano for 18 years. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Greensboro College in Greensboro, North Carolina. Danielle is the piano accompanist at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Gaithersburg, MD and director of the children’s choir. She also serves as the musical director and vocal coach for youth ages 12-25 in the Gilbert & Sullivan’s Youth Players productions at the Capital Fringe Festival as well as Imagination Stage, and has been accompanying theatre groups, instrumentalists, choirs, and singers since 2001.


Jacob Frasch (Piano) MM, BM- Mr. Frasch earned his degrees from the Oberlin and Peabody conservatories and was a recipient of the Louis and Annette Kaufman Prize in chamber music. His performances include recitals across the United States, and he has given concerts at the Music Academy of the West, Bowdoin International Summer Music Festival, and the Kent/Blossom Music Festival. He has extensive teaching experience throughout the Midwest and the DC metro area. In addition to teaching at ISM, he is an accompanist for the Peabody Preparatory School and member of the National Piano Guild.


Margarita Glebov (Piano) MM, BM- Margarita Glebov is a candidate for a Doctorate of Musical Arts from the University of Maryland. Ms. Glebov received her Master of Music from the University of Maryland and her Bachelor of Music from the Peabody Conservatory at Johns Hopkins University. Margarita has taught privately since 2003. She has also achieved high honors and accolades such as First Place in the Homer Ulrich Competition, First Place in the Grossmont Scholarship Competition, First Place in the La Jolla Symphony Young Artist’s Competition, and recipient of the Senatorial Scholarship of Maryland.


Jeannie Han (Piano) BM, MM- Ms. Han has won numerous competitions such as National Competition in South Korea, Cogen Concerto Competition, Russian-American International Competition, and Beethoven Society Competition. She has completed studies at the Peabody Conservatory and the University of Maryland where she is currently pursuing a DMA in piano performance. Her teaching experience includes the Woodbridge school and ISM. She is a member of the MTNA, and Piano Guild/ACM for which her students have earned high merit scores in festivals, juries, and auditions. Ms. Han is an accompanist for the Great Multitudes Presbyterian Church.


Timothy Hoft (Piano) MM, BM- Timothy Hoft is a candidate for a Doctorate of Musical Arts (D.M.A.) in Piano Performance from the Peabody Conservatory at John Hopkins University. He holds two Master’s Degrees from the Peabody Conservatory, one in Piano Performance and the other in Music Theory Pedagogy. Timothy has taught individual private lessons since 1998 and instructs students of all ages. Mr. Hoft is also a recipient of numerous honors and awards such as receiving both the Earl Wild Scholarship and the La Gesse Foundation Fellowship as well as placing 1st at both the Michigan Youth Arts Festival Competition and the Margaret Denise Competition. Timothy has also performed for the last decade and a half as an orchestral member and a soloist with such groups as the Detroit Civic Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestra of St. Peter by the Sea, and the Peabody Camerata

 

Joshua Horsch (Piano) Mr. Horsch joins the ISM faculty from Pennsylvania, where he earned his Master’s Degree in Orchestral Conducting at The Pennsylvania State University. While earning his Bachelor’s Degree in Piano Performance at Ithaca College, Mr. Horsch served as pianist for the Symphony Orchestra, Wind Ensemble and Contemporary Chamber Ensemble and taught private piano lessons through the Piano Pedagogy Department. At The Pennsylvania State University, Mr. Horsch continued developing his teaching skills with a position on the faculty of The Arts Conservatory of Central Pennsylvania. His conducting experience includes posts with community and youth orchestras as well as opera and musical theater companies throughout Pennsylvania and New York.


Alice Ji (Piano) Ms. Ji holds degrees from the University of Colorado, Boulder and The Dungduk Women’s University in Seoul, South Korea. In addition to her years of experience as a private instructor, she also lectured regularly on Piano Adventures methodologies at university pedagogy classes in South Korea. She has participated in numerous festivals and workshops, including the MTNA Colorado State Divisional, The Concerto Marathon at Brevard Music Festival and the Fifth Piano Celebration at Metropolitan State College of Denver.


Jeanette Kim (Piano) BM- Ms. Kim is a winner of numerous competitions such as the Korean National Competition, MTNA, Elizabeth Davis Competition, Miriam Shield Gottlieb Competition, and the Friday Morning Music Club. Along with her radio broadcast debut in Chicago (WFMT), she has performed on national TV and in Spain, England and South Korea. Ms. Kim has been teaching piano and vocal coaching for over 10 years. She graduated from the Peabody Conservatory and is an accompanist at Korean Presbyterian Church.


Eunbi Kim (Piano) Ms. Kim is a recent graduate of The Catholic University of America. She has worked as a private piano instructor as well as a Lead Teacher at the Asian-American Leadership, Empowerment and Development program. Ms. Kim has received numerous awards for her performances from organizations such as The Maryland State Music Teachers Association, The Washington Post Music and Dance Scholarship Awards and the Elizabeth R. Davis Memorial Piano Competition.


Dr. Cecile Khill (Piano) Dr. Khill is a graduate of the doctoral program in piano pedagogy at The Catholic University of America. While attending Catholic University, she published several research papers and lectures on elementary and intermediate teaching methods. Dr. Khill participated in the Israeli-Arab Scholarship program as a Fulbright Scholar for nearly 4 years, and has received other prestigious awards for academics such as the America-Israel Educational Fund Scholarship and the Ruben Academy of Music Scholarship. In addition to teaching posts at Montgomery College, ISM, and Catholic University, Dr. Khill most recently sered as Founder, Director and Instructor at Pianoforte Conservatory in Nazareth, Israel. She has published piano method books for the beginning piano student and is a member of the College Music Society and the National Piano Guild/American College of Musicians. Dr. Khill is the ISM Piano Department Chair.

 

Rebecca Kletzker (Violin/Viola/Piano) Ms. Kletzker has received degrees in both music performance and music education. She is an active freelance performer in the Washington, D. C. area, and has performed with groups such as the Season of Ascension Trio, The Great Noise Ensemble, Inscape, the University of Maryland Symphony, Contemporary Chamber Players, The Alton Symphony Orchestra, and the Jewish Community Center Symphony Orchestra. She has received numerous honors and has participated in music festivals in Europe and across the United States. She is currently an instructor of strings at DeMatha Catholic High School and ISM. Her recordings include “Todd Agna”, “Grace Like Rain”, and “Reflection of Something”.


Nathan Lincoln-Decusatis (Jazz Piano) DMA, MM, BM- In addition to regular jazz performances in Washington DC, has taught courses in music fundamentals and music technology. He has completed studies at Ithica College, L’ECole Normale de Musique (Paris, FR). Mr. Lincoln-Decusatis is a member of the College Music Society, the Society for ComposersInc., and the American Music Center. He has won both the Walsum Prize and the Smadbeck Prize for composition.


Brad Linde (Jazz Piano) MM, BA- Brad Linde holds a Master’s Degree in Jazz Studies from the University of Maryland and a Bachelor’s in Music from Elon University in North Carolina where he studied extensively with Jazz vibraphonist Jon Metzger. Brad’s extensive teaching experience includes maintaining a studio of private students in woodwinds and jazz harmony, teaching jazz improvisation, and jazz combo at the University of Maryland and fostering the development of the jazz language at various workshops and clinics around the D.C. Metro area. He is a student of Lee Konitz and Barry Harris.


Grace Luo (Piano) MM, BM- Ms. Luo holds degrees in Piano Performance from the University of Maryland, where she served as Coordinator of the Chamber Music Program, and the University of Michigan. She has served as a counselor for the Interlochen Arts Camp and currently maintains a studio consisting of students of all ages and ability levels. She has worked extensively as a collaborative pianist for vocalists, instrumentalists, and choirs.


Mike Maher (Jazz Piano) MM,BM- Mr. Maher graduated from Oberlin Conservatory and has taught at the Holton-Arms School, Montgomey College, Shenandoah University, Suitland Center for the Performing Arts. He is a member of ASCAP and the American Federation of Musicians. Mr. Maher has performed at the Kennedy Center, Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington’s National Theater, Wolftrap, as well as with the Richmond and Orlando Symphonies. Mr. Maher has contributed to the ongoing lecture/recital series “Giants of Jazz” and has been guest lecturer at St. John’s College, New Mexico University, and Gallaudet University.

Magdalina Melkonyan (Piano) Ms. Melkonyan received her musical training from the Tchaikovsky Music High School, Yerevan Conservatory, Catholic University, the University of Iowa, and the University of Maryland. She has performed with the Armenian Symphony Orchestra and was a 1st prize winner of the Amadeus Piano Competition. Her other performance accomplishments include appearances with the Iowa Symphony Orchestra and Babadjanyan Philharmonic. She is currently pursuing a doctorate in piano performance at the University of Maryland, where she also serves as a graduate accompanist.


Karine Muradyan (Piano) MA BA- Ms. Muradyan has been on the faculty at ISM and North Potomac School of Music, and a music director and choir conductor at Francis Asbury UMC, Rockville. While in Armenia, she served as director of the Piano Program as well as piano professor and accompanist at The International Sanna Quality School. She is an active member of the Friday Morning Music Club, Royal School of Music, and the Piano Guild/American College of Musicians, where her students have accomplished high merit scores in juries/exams, competitions, and auditions. Ms. Muradyan has performed at the Ellipse Arts Center, US Yerevan, Etchmiadzin (Armenia) and Tamilino (Moscow), the Sumner Museum, Strathmore Mansion, and the Armenian Embassy.


Victoria Naneyshvili (Piano) MM- Mrs. Naneyshivili’s teaching experience includes music schools in the Republic of Georgia, the Tblisi College of Music and Art, and the European Academy in Silver Spring. As pianist she has worked with the School of Classic Ballet and Painting, Interdance School of Ballet, and the Metropolitan Ballet Theater and Academy. She is a member of MTNA, the National Piano Guild, & the American College of Musicians.


Dr. Dimitar Nikolov (Piano) DMA, MA, MM, BM- Dr. Dimitar Nikolov holds a Doctorate from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, a Master of Arts from the University of Northern Iowa, and both a Master and Bachelor of Music from the State Academy of Music. A recipient of the Aspen Conducting Fellowship, First Place at the Svetoslav Obretenov National Competition, and the Pantcho Bladigerov Award for composition, Dr. Nikolov is an extremely accomplished student of music. Dimitar has taught at various colleges and public schools such as serving as a visiting lecturer at the State Academy of Music, Assistant Professor of Music from Simpson College, and Adjunct Instructor at the Catholic University of America. Dr. Nikolov’s performance career is equally as impressive having performed at Bulgarian National Radio Concert Hall as a Soloist and Conductor with the Schoumen Philharmonic, and guest conducting the Burgas Philharmonic, Vrata Philharmonic, and Vidin Philharmonic.


Stefan Petrov (Piano) Mr. Petrov holds a Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degree in Piano Performance and a Master’s Degree in Theory Pedagogy from The Peabody Institute, and his is currently pursuing his Doctoral Degree from the same institution. Mr. Petrov has held a faculty position at the University of Central Arkansas Community School of Music as well as positions as pianist for the Peabody Singers, Peabody Chorus and Peabody Syphony and Concert Orchestras. He is the winner of Ckara Ascherfield Award, the Eckhardt-Gramatte Competition, and the Liberace Scholarship.

 

Sarah L. Powell (Voice/Piano) MM, BA- Sarah Powell received her Master’s in Music from the New England Conservatory in Boston, and her Bachelor of Arts in Music Performance from the University of North Carolina. Ms. Powell has led various groups ranging from conducting a cappella voice ensembles at UNC to directing scenes programs for New England Conservatory Light Opera Company. Her performance career includes appearing in numerous operas and shows such as Don Giovanni (Zerlina) with the Boston Opera Collaborative, The Gondoliers (Tessa) with Savoyard Light Opera Company, Guys and Dolls (Sarah Brown) with the Turtle Lane Theater, and Grease (Rizzo) with the Grapevine Runway Theater.


Yelena Rodovskaya (Piano) MM, BM- Ms. Rodovskaya’s teaching experience includes the Norilsk College of Music and Jelgava College in Russia, and the European Academy of Music in the United States. Ms. Rodovskaya was an accompanist at American University and the Bethesda Academy of Performing Arts. She is a member of the Music Teacher National Association and an adjudicator for MTAI.


Sofya Vulfson (Piano) MA- Ms. Vulfson completed studies in piano performance, accompaniment and chamber music at the Moscow Academy of Music. She has served on the faculty of the Irkutsk Central School, and the Novosibirsk Academy of Music, Riga Conservatory of Music in Latvia. Currently, she teaches at the ISM in addition to being an accompanist at the School of Classical Ballet in Potomac. Ms. Vulfson is a member of MTNA and National Piano Guild sponsored by the American College of Musicians.

 

Katerina Zaitseva (Piano) MM, BM- Katerina Zaitseva has performed in the United States, Germany, Luxemburg, France, South Korea, Japan, and Russia including appearances in the Moscow State Conservatory Hall (Moscow, Russia), John F. Kennedy Center (Washington D.C.), and Steinway Hall (Dallas, Texas). She was also privileged to play for the King of Spain, Juan Carlos, at the opening of the Meadows Museum of Arts in Dallas. Ms. Zaitseva has been featured as soloist with the Russian Philharmonic Orchestra, Dallas Chamber Orchestra, Meadows Symphony Orchestra, Corvallis Symphony, Lewisville Lake Symphony, Northeast Arkansas Symphony, and Rapides Symphony Orchestra. Katerina has recorded two albums on the Classical Records label, and frequently in multiple chamber capacities. She is a winner of severalcompetitions including the MTNA Competition, SMU Concerto Competition, and the Von Mickwitz Prize in Piano. Ms. Zaitseva served on the faculty of Louisiana College and is member of MTNA.



Guitar


John F. Armato (Guitar) MM, BM- Mr. Armato is a graduate of the Peabody Conservatory of Music of the Johns Hopkins University with both a Master in Music Performance and Bachelor of Music Performance from the conservatory. John has performed with such groups as the Peabody Consort, Peabody Renaissance Ensemble, Baltimore Baroque Band, and various duos and solos. A recipient of a number of awards such as First Place in the Pasadena City College Guitar Competition, John has also participated in the master classes of Manuel Barrueco and has been coached by such greats as Julian Gray, Ray Chester, Richard Field, and Richard Stone. Mr. Armato also serves on the faculty of Mount Saint Mary’s University.


Richard Barry (Suzuki and Traditional Guitar) MM, BM- Richard Barry holds a Master’s Degree in Guitar Performance and a Bachelor of Guitar Music Performance both from the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University. Mr. Barry’s educational training and experience is extensive. Richard has taught at numerous colleges, high schools, middle, and elementary schools and is Suzuki certified. Having performed at such venues as the Cohen Davidson Hall at Peabody, Wieler Hall at the University of Redlands, and the Hippodrome in Baltimore, Mr. Barry’s performance career is as accomplished as his instructional one.


Robert Hanson (Guitar) BM- A graduate of the Peabody Institute of Music of the Johns Hopkins University with a Bachelor of Music degree, Robert Hanson is also an accomplished instructor and performer. Mr. Hanson has taught guitar privately for many years as well as serving on the faculty of the Essex and Catonsville Colleges of Baltimore County. Robert has also been featured in the Master Classes of Eliot Fisk of the New England Conservatory and Benjamin Verdery of the Yale School of Music. Mr. Hanson has also performed in the Ellington Theater as a concerto soloist, the historic Blues Alley jazz club in Georgetown, and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.


Serge Khrichenko (Bass Guitar/Electric/Acoustic Guitar) BM- Serge completed his early musical studies at the Pedagogical Institute of Pyatigorsk, Russia. He has since become the winner of numerous accolades including the Guitarmageddon competition. He has performed with numerous musicians in addition to his solo performances in Russia, Europe, and the US (New York City, Philadelphia, Washington D.C.). Some of his performances include concerts for Baltimore Klezmer Orchestra, Russian Embassy, French Embassy, Strathmore Hall, and local and international jazz festivals. Mr. Khrichenko taught at the Kislovodsk Music School in Russia, Creative Art Studio, and is currently on the faculty at ISM. In 2007 two of his songs were given awards at the International “Song of the Year” contest. His music listed on the “Top 10” of the Earth Charts for all of 2007 in the jazz-fusion category.


James R. Lowe (Guitar) Mr. Lowe is a graduate of the Universtiy of Nebraska at Omaha, where he attained a Bachelor’s degree in Guitar Performance. Currently, he is pursuing his Master’s Degree at the Peabody Institute. In addition to years of experience as a private guitar and theory instructor, Mr. Lowe currently serves as Co-Artistic Director of the Liegetisplit Ensemble and has performed as a soloist with the Peabody Chamber Opera, the Omaha Symphony and Opera Omaha.


Mia Pomerantz (Guitar) BM- Mia has been the recipient of numerous awards such as Keren Sharett award, winner of Appalachian Guitar Fest Competition, Peabody Merit Award, President’s Education Award, etc. In 2007 she won “Best Interpretation of a Piece by Sor” at the Fernando Sor Competition in Rome. Her performances include solo, duo, and guitar quartet concerts in Israel, Germany, Italy, Mexico, and the U.S. Ms. Pomerantz is currently studying with Manuel Barrueco on her Graduate Performance Degree at the Peabody Conservatory.


Jann Rannik (Guitar) Mr. Rannik is a graduate of the Peabody Conservatory of Music, where he is also pursuing his Master’s Degree in Classical Guitar. He brings extensive experience as a guitar teacher to ISM, having held positions at A.R.T.I.S.T Music Education Center, Music & Arts and the Appalachian Bluegrass Shoppe. In addition to classical guitar, Mr. Rannik is well-versed in bluegrass, jazz, metal and rock styles of playing.


Jarrod Smerk (Guitar) MA, BM- Mr. Smerk’s teaching experience includes Radford University, Bridge-Kaloro Music, the Pulawy International Guitar Festival. He has conducted research on and specializes in the music of Maximo Diego Pujol (upon which he presented research at the College Music Society Regional Conference) and has written on sensory motor retraining for focal dystonia. He has performed in Switzerland, Poland, and the US.


Casey Fox Smith (Guitar) Casey Smith joins the ISM faculty from the Peabody Conservatory Master’s Program, where he will continue his studies with Julian Gray as he works toward a Graduate Diploma. While attending the University of South Carolina, where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree, Mr. Smith has served on the faculties of Columbia Arts Academy, Columbia Guitar Orchestra and Columbia Rock Academy.


Daniel R. Walshaw (Guitar/Theory) BM- Mr. Walshaw is currently pursuing a Master’s Degree of Instrumental Conducting under the guidance of James Ross at the University of Maryland, School of Music. Daniel has served as a classical guitar and theory instructor at Oakland University and the International Academy in Michigan, as well as Teaching Assistant with the University of Maryland Repertoire Orchestra where he oversaw all directorial duties including programming, organizing auditions, rehearsing, and conducting concerts. Mr. Walshaw has performed with such groups as the Inscape Music Project and the University of Maryland Wind Ensemble.



Brass
 

Mark Morgan (Trumpet/Euphonium/Trombone/Tuba)- Mr. Morgan is currently a member of the US Navy Band where he performs with the Commodores Jazz Band.  He has performed in all of the lower 48 States, and served as the Instructor of Trombone for the Armed Forces School of Music.  Mark earned his degree in music performance from Winthrop University.

 

 

Early Childhood Music

 

Cara Lyles  Ms. Lyles is certified in Kindermusk teaching methodologies.  She is a member of the American College of Musicians and The Music Teachers National Association.  Cara has directed church choirs, festivals, and musicals.  Her teaching experience includes Kindermusik in Boyds, ELF preschools, and many others.  Cara has been the recipient of numerous awards including the Beta Music Award, the Knott Music Award and the Fletcher & Brown Scholarship.
