Your toddler will explore some "familiar creatures" in our neighborhood jungle of birds, bugs and other animals while being gently guided and encouraged by a caregiver. Piano Music Camp: (6 - 16 yrs.) Enjoy a week in a supportive environment as you focus on piano with other students your age. Students receive piano lessons and participate in workshops on a variety of pianistic topics such as: musicianship, ensemble playing, performance, and technique. Students will also have the opportunity to develop their skills in sight reading, ear training, and musical expression. Students are placed according to their musical interests, age, experience and performance level. Beginning level students: Through a creative and fun approach to learning the basics of note-reading through the use of games, puzzles, and hands-on activities, campers are introduced to the building blocks of music (rhythm, pitch, and technique). Students develop and practice piano skills by learning to play simple popular songs. They also explore two-piano and four hand repertoire through daily coaching, master classes, social events and informal performances. Intermediate level students: This camp offers students the joy of intermediate piano repertoire. Keyboard classics and popular songs are mixed with rehearsals, performances, and sight reading sessions. Note reading, music notation, keyboard, and ensemble skills are covered in a stimulating approach to learning. Advanced level students: Under the guidance of the camp faculty, students discover the components of advanced piano literature as they study, rehearse, and perform music that focuses on different compositional periods. Master classes, where students are able to perform in front of others and discuss the finer points of music, are a large component of this camp. Additional workshops and activities include: piano ensembles, history lessons, repertoire, listening sessions, music analysis, technique and performance practice.

Instrument Petting Zoo: (6-12 yrs.) Let your child explore a variety of instruments such as piano, guitar, violin, cello, voice, percussion, and woodwinds in a supportive learning environment. Children rotate sessions throughout the day on a variety of instruments. Campers learn correct positioning and technique, play simple and fun songs, and participate in educational games. The ISM faculty will help your child explore simple music theory, history, ensembles, and singing. By listening to music selections from a range of genres and styles, students quickly learn to recognize and appreciate the unique qualities of each instrument. Please note that children will be placed in age appropriate groups. All instruments are provided by ISM.

Private Lessons: (5 yrs. and older) Private lessons are available in any instrument or voice and can be taken in addition to any camp. Private lessons ensure that you have the undivided attention of the teacher so that you can progress at your own rate. Due to the flexible summer schedule, students can take lessons more frequently (2-3 times a week), schedule around personal vacations, and/or experiment with other instruments. Private instrumental lessons are available for piano, violin, viola, cello, bass, guitar, percussion, bass guitar, clarinet, trumpet, harp, flute, trombone, saxophone, and voice.

Chamber Music Camp: (9-18 yrs.) This camp provides an ensemble experience for piano, strings, brass and woodwind instrumentalists. This is a unique opportunity for young musicians like yourself to be coached in small or large instrumental ensembles. The purpose of this camp is to develop chamber performance techniques, learn new chamber repertoire, and improve musicianship skills. Students are placed according to their musical interests, age, experience and performance level. Chamber music provides students an opportunity to learn teamwork and to share musical ideas with their peers. The remarkable degree of progress that students make during this camp is due to the level of supervision, consistency of the daily routine, and the intensity of the relationships that develop amongst participants. Students in this program share the excitement of learning, enthusiasm for chamber music, and pride in their progress. You will participate in daily coaching with ISM faculty, supervised practice, technique & repertoire classes, sectionals, music games, creative improvisation, sight-reading, music theory, student performances, and master classes. New students are welcome as well as currently enrolled ISM students. Applicants should have good music reading skills; pre-established groups are welcome.

Rock & Roll Band Camp: (9-18 yrs.) Come and build your own band! Previous music instruction for at least 2 years is a prerequisite for this camp. This is your chance to spend your summer writing and performing your own rock songs. We are accepting all instrumentalists including singers, percussionists, guitarists, bassists, and keyboardists. Campers will get to meet some great musicians and take home a live recording of their performance. Students will be grouped according to age and experience. You will gain team work and leadership skills through group interaction, performance, and semi-private classes. You will also develop your band’s unique style and image by designing album cover art, T-shirts and a band name. Campers must bring their own instrument, except keyboards and drums which are provided by ISM. The session culminates with a live performance, the Rock Camp Jam. All instruments and voices are welcome! Make this summer rock !

Counselor-in-Training Program: (13 – 18) Especially designed for teenagers who love to work with young children and want to spend their summer gaining valuable work experience. This program helps teenagers develop leadership and counseling skills while working closely with ISM faculty and staff. Through observation and practice, CITs learn the skills and gain the experience required to work with groups of young children. CITs participate in activities such as: organizing special activities, planning events, learning about teaching styles, and problem-solving skill development. Extra work consists of assisting school administrators with daily camp routines. CITs will observe teachers and counselors in a classroom setting in addition to observing team-building activities, discipline, and curriculum-building.

ISM Internship Program: (18 yrs. and older) The summer Internship Program is for aspiring individuals who seek to develop their gifts in the areas of education, administration, and the arts. Ideal for young artists and educators, it offers the opportunity for individuals to meet and work with leading professionals in the performing arts industry through hands-on experience. Applicants should have completed one year of college or have equivalent on the job experience in any of the pertaining disciplines. Class topics cover job opportunities in the performing arts, resume evaluation, and “how to’s” on various topics related to the industry. Office Intern: This intern, working closely with an ISM administrator, will assist in coordinating the various aspects of the summer camp including: facility management, student, guest, and faculty services, course offerings, performances, rehearsals, program preparation and personnel management. In addition they will assist in organizing special activities, assisting with schedules, and helping with every day office tasks. Teaching Intern: This intern will be uniquely positioned to assist the ISM faculty with all master classes, recitals, and performances of the ISM camp. This program helps interns learn different pedagogical styles, problem-solving, classroom management, and positive reinforcement. Interns will also observe teachers in the classroom setting and participate in fun team-building activities. Interns will have a chance to apply what they have learned by assisting in specific camp classes.

GENERAL INFORMATION & POLICIES Registration: While we allow last minutes registrations, please be advised that our camps do sell out. Admission to the program is on a first-come, first-served basis. All students must complete and submit the ISM summer camp registration, health form, and submit a payment at time of registration before courses begin. Students will not be allowed to attend without completed paperwork. Class sizes are limited; therefore the advance registration ensures enrollment. We reserve the right to close registration for programs that are filled and to cancel programs that are undersubscribed. ISM reserves the right to add or delete courses, change times, fees or instructors at its discretion. If a camp does not meet minimum enrollment 7 days before the first day of the camp, this camp may be cancelled. Students will be notified and given the opportunity to enroll in another camp or receive a full refund including any deposit, which will be issued within 60 days of cancellation. Registration for Private Music Lessons: Please call the ISM office at 301-365-5888, so we can help you schedule your summer music lessons. Policies for private lessons are: ISM requires 30 day notice for a withdrawal, and 24hr notice for any cancelations due to sickness in order for the lesson to be made up (please limit it to 1 per summer). Pre-Requisites: Most ISM summer programs assume no prior musical experience; however, except where noted some ISM camps require a placement at the time of registration (These courses are marked with an * on the schedule). Also, campers are required to bring their own instruments (except piano & drums). Acceptance: We will notify you by mail or email 3 weeks after receiving your registration OR before 3/25/10 to confirm acceptance into ISM summer camps. Those placed on the waiting list will also be notified. Also please feel free to check with our office after 3 weeks of application. Cancelations/ Refund Policy: Due to the group dynamics, and to avoid disruption of learning, No refund or reductions will be made for late arrival, early departure, or absences from Camp because of parent’s/camper’s decision. If for unforeseen circumstance the student can not attend the camp for which they are registered, you have the option to transfer the registered student to another camp, pending availability. Due to the high number of families interested in these camps/programs, we cannot refund the tuition once they’ve been submitted. NO EXCEPTIONS! If you wish to cancel and would like an ISM credit (good for 1 calendar year) you must notify us in writing at (info@ismw.org) at least 2 weeks prior to the start of the camp week. Credits may be used for future ISM camps or private music lessons. If you decide to cancel within the 2 week time frame no credit will be given. Refunds of tuition are made only in the event that there are no openings available in a program you selected, or a program is cancelled because of insufficient enrollment. Schedule, instructors and prices are subject to change. Health forms: All students must have the enclosed health forms completed and signed (by their physician) on file by June 1st . These forms must be on record in the office before their session begins or admission to the program may be suspended. We do not administer medications. Also ISM cannot guarantee an allergy-free environment. Note: If your child is not a student in the state of MD, you must obtain a copy of his or her complete immunization records from your doctor and turn it in to the Camp office. Lunch & Snacks: Campers are responsible for packing & bringing their own lunch, snacks and drinks. Please clearly label and staple your child's bag closed. Refrigeration and/or heating are not available. Clothing—Children are encouraged to dress comfortably. Camper Dismissal: The ISM Summer Program reserves the right to dismiss, without refund, any child who displays inappropriate or unsafe behavior. Camp with a Friend (For Campers who would like to be in the same group with their friends). If you would like your child to be placed in the same camp class with a friend, please indicate that information in the “Camp with a Friend” section of the application. We will do our best to place them in the same group. Transportation: Transportation is the responsibility of the parent/guardian Permission to Participate: By registering a child for ISM camp, Parents agree and give permission for their child to participate fully in all programs and engage in all ISM activities during the camp. Waiver: Parents/Guardians release and discharge and indemnify ISM, ISM Camp, its faculty, employees, contractors, it’s directors, officers, agents, and the Montgomery Recreation Department from all liability for loss, damage, injury or illness to their Child and their Child’s property relating to or deriving from their Child’s presence at ISM and their Child’s participations in ISM camp activities by whatever cause. Media Release: ISM Camp may use any photos taken during the camp in which students may appear in. By registering for ISM camp, students and parents give permission to use these photos in print (on advertisements or marketing materials) or on the ISM web site or other ISM affiliated or sponsored web sites. ISM does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, ancestry, gender, sexual orientation, physical or mental disability, marital or veteran status, or age in its admission, education programs, activities, or employment practices.
FAQ How do I register? You can register over the phone with a credit card, in person in the ISM office or by downloading a registration form from our website at www.ismw.org, and mailing or faxing it in with payment. How do I drop off and pick up my child for summer camps and courses? Parents are responsible for their child’s safe and timely arrival to ISM courses/camps and their departure from the building. Students are not to be dropped off more than 15 min before the course/camp starting time. Students drop-off and pick-up is in front of the ISM entrance doors. This is only a drop-off and pick-up lane, not a parking area, and is subject to ticketing fines. Also, please do not allow campers to walk in the parking lot unaccompanied by an adult. Does the ISM offer before- or after –care? No. Unfortunately, the ISM does not offer before- or after-care. Does ISM provide lunch for summer camp? No. You will need to pack a lunch for your child each day. Please pack non-perishable items since your child will not have access to a refrigerator or a microwave. Please label the lunch box with your child’s name. What should my child wear to summer camp? We recommend that students wear comfortable clothes like shorts, T-shirts and sneakers. Please label any removable clothing (jackets, sweaters, etc) with your child’s name and phone number. What number do I call if I need to get a message to my child during the day? Call 301-365-5888 and ask for the Camp Director or Assistant Camp Director. What if I need to drop my child off late? You will need to walk your child into the building and check in with the Camp Director. What if my child is sick and unable to attend camp as scheduled? If your child misses a day within the camp week(s), a phone call is appreciated, but not required. Unfortunately, we cannot offer refunds because camp space is in high demand.
